The modern pig - farming industry generates substantial amounts of pig manure. If not managed properly, this waste can pose significant environmental threats, including water pollution from nutrient runoff, air pollution due to the release of ammonia and greenhouse gases like methane, and the spread of pathogens. However, through the process of pig manure compost, pig manure can be transformed into a nutrient - rich, beneficial product that enriches soil and supports sustainable agriculture.

1) Microbial Activity
• Once the feedstock is placed in the compost, a diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes, starts to break down the organic matter. These microorganisms are naturally present in the pig manure.
• Aerobic bacteria are the primary decomposers during the initial stages of composting. They consume the organic matter in the presence of oxygen, releasing energy, carbon dioxide, and water as by - products. As the composting process progresses, thermophilic (heat - loving) microorganisms become dominant. These thermophilic bacteria and fungi can tolerate the high temperatures generated during composting and are responsible for the rapid decomposition of complex organic compounds.

2) Composting Phases
• The composting process can be divided into three four phases: the warming phase, the high temperature phase, the cooling phase and the maturity phase. It usually lasts 7-10 days.
• Warming Phase: In the early stage, the temperature of the composting mixture ranges from 25 - 45°C (77 - 113°F). Mesophilic microorganisms, which are active at these temperatures, start to break down the easily degradable organic matter, such as simple sugars and starches.
• High temperature Phase: As the microbial activity increases, the temperature rises to the thermophilic range of 45 - 70°C (113 - 158°F). This phase is crucial for pathogen and weed - seed destruction. The high temperatures kill harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, as well as weed seeds, making the final compost product safe for agricultural use.
• Cooling Phase and maturity phase: After the thermophilic phase, the temperature gradually decreases, and the compost enters the curing phase. During this phase, the remaining organic matter is further decomposed into a more stable form, and the compost matures.
